Scope

Storage and handling of anhydrous ammonia in the US — tanks, piping, valves, transfer.

Key requirements (6)

  • Compressed Gas Association standard for ammonia (NH3).
  • Storage classifications: high-pressure (Type I), low-pressure refrigerated (Type II), refrigerated semi-pressurized (Type III).
  • Refrigerated NH3 storage: typically –33 °C atmospheric, double or full containment per API 625.
  • Material: low-temperature carbon steel (ASTM A516 Gr 60/70 with stress relief) for refrigerated; A106/A53 for piping.
  • Avoids copper, brass, zinc and aluminum due to corrosion / SCC.
  • Stress-corrosion cracking risk on un-stress-relieved CS in NH3 with O2 contamination — PWHT mandatory.
